Toronto is both the largest city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario. It is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario in Southern Ontario.

Toronto has more than 2.5 million residents and is the fifth most populated municipality in North America. It is the heart of the Greater Toronto Area, and is part of a densely populated region in Southern Ontario known as the Golden Horseshoe. The Golden Horshoe contains about 25% of Canada's population. and is the home to over 8.1 million residents.

Toronto is the economic capital of Canada, and is considered to be one of the top financial centres in the world. Many businesses come from the following industries: finance, business services, telecommunications, aerospace, transportation, media, arts, film, television, publishing, software production, medical research, education, tourism and sports. The Toronto Stock Exchange is the world's eighth largest (in terms of its market value) and is headquartered in the city. It's population plays an important role to immigrants to Canada. It is one of the world's most diverse cities by percentage of non-native-born residents, as about half of the population were born outside of Canada.

Toronto is blessed with low crime rates, a clean environment, a high standard of living, and a friendly attitude to diversity, It is consistently rated as 'one of the world's most livable cities' and was ranked as the most expensive Canadian city in which to live in. Considered by many as the financial capital of Canada, Toronto is a major international centre for business and finance with a high concentration of banks and brokerage firms on Bay Street, in the Financial District. The Toronto Stock Exchange is the world's eighth-largest stock exchange by market capitalization. In fact, all the Big Five banks of Canada are headquartered in Toronto, as are most of Canada's largest corporations.

The city is also an important centre for the media, publishing, telecommunications, information technology and film production industries. Toronto is home to Thomson Corporation, CTV globe media, Rogers Communications, and Celestica, as well as the following other Canadian corporations: Sun Life Financial, the Hudson's Bay Company Manulife Financial, and others.

Toronto continues to be an important wholesale and distribution point for the industrial sector. Though, a great deal of the region's manufacturing activities take place outside the city limits. The city's strategic location along the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor and its extensive road and rail connections help support the nearby production of motor vehicles, iron, steel, food, machinery, chemicals and paper.
